The Singaporean Micro-Brand Boldr, which specializes in adventure and outdoor wristwatches and gear, recently launched its new Safari Series, inspired by the vast African plains and wildlife conservationists. With 3 basic variations (Ranger, Defender and GMT), the Series comes in 7 different models, in a style rather resembling a field watch, especially the Ranger models, and all featuring California dials:

  • Ranger Kopje
  • Ranger Upepo
  • Defender Elewana
  • Defender Siana
  • GMT Maasai Mara
  • GMT Serengeti
  • GMT Tarangire

A Cali-dial consists of half Roman and half Arabic numerals, while a dash often replaces the hours 3, 6, and 9 and was created during World War II to aid legibility in low-light combat conditions. This adds to the vintagy, military-inspired style of the Safari Series.

Super-LumiNova® on hands and digits

What we like:

  • The elegant retro-inspired, field watch style
  • Features and materials: sapphire lens, water resistance of 20 bars, screw-down-crown, exhibition case
  • Reliable automatic movement from Seiko
  • Price-performance: starting at around $300, a lot of watch for the buck

What could be better:

Perhaps another dial option in case you are not a fan of Cali dials. But that is us just being picky, because it is not easy to find anything to complain about these watches, especially for this price.

The casebacks depict randonly one of four  animal species found on a typical safari, a reminder to conserve our wildlife population.

The steel mesh bracelet is made in Milanese mesh for more flexibility and finesse. The quick and easy adjusting clasp is engraved with YEMA’s logo.
